PSA's 2.0-litre common-rail diesel and the larger sibling of the DV6 — fitted across Peugeot, Citroën, and (as the earlier 2.0 TDCi) Ford, Volvo and Mini. A long-lived, generally well-regarded engine that has run through several emissions generations.

The recurring items are the variable-geometry turbocharger, whose vanes stick with carbon and produce a boost fault that often frees with cleaning rather than replacement, and the diesel particulate filter — on the earlier cars an additive-based (FAP) system with its own fluid reservoir and its own set of faults that look like filter faults but are not.

Injector wear producing a rough cold idle, and EGR cooler blockage, complete the list. The additive system deserves particular mention because an empty or unregistered additive tank prevents regeneration entirely, and the resulting cascade of filter codes reads as a failed filter on a car whose filter is fine.

36 generations, across 9 makes. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
