If your car has suddenly started sounding different, read this before booking it in for exhaust or suspension work.
The unit this code names is the sound processor in the audio system, and on modern cars it does two things beyond music that most owners have never been told about.
It cancels road noise. Microphones listen to the drone from the road and the engine, and the car plays the opposite of it through the speakers to cancel it out — all the time, whether or not the stereo is on. And on many cars it plays an engine note into the cabin through the speakers, because the real engine does not sound the way the makers wanted.
So here is the thing worth understanding: the car has not developed a new noise. It has stopped hiding an old one. That drone was always being produced by your tyres and the road — the speakers were quietly cancelling it. What you are hearing now is what your car actually sounds like.
Which is why this gets so expensively misdiagnosed. A new drone at a steady speed gets investigated as a wheel bearing, a tyre or an exhaust, and none of those has changed. An engine that suddenly sounds coarse gets investigated as an exhaust leak.
If this code is stored and a new noise appeared at the same time, say so before anything is taken apart. It is the cheapest possible explanation and very often the right one.
Ce que signifie ce code
The digital audio control module has stopped being heard from. The general reasoning is at U0100, modules C and D are at U0237 and U0238, and U0494 explains the two jobs these units do that have nothing to do with entertainment.
Those jobs are active noise cancellation and synthesised engine sound, and silence produces a version of the resulting complaint that is worth stating precisely, because it inverts how people describe it.
When noise cancellation stops, the car does not develop a new noise. It stops hiding an old one. The drone was always there — produced by the tyres, the road surface and the engine, exactly as it always has been — and the speakers were playing an inverted copy of it into the cabin to cancel it out. So what the driver hears as "a droning noise that has just appeared" is the car's actual, unassisted sound.
That matters because of what it gets diagnosed as. A drone or boom at a steady cruise is investigated as a wheel bearing, a tyre, an exhaust or an engine mount — parts that get replaced without changing anything, because nothing about them has altered. A stored audio code alongside a new drone is the cheap explanation and it should be eliminated first.
The synthesised engine note fails the same way and reads differently. An engine that suddenly sounds coarse, thin or unfamiliar has not changed either; the layer that was being played over it has stopped. That gets investigated as an exhaust leak.
Where the fault is: these processors sit with the amplifier — under a front seat or in a boot side panel — so U0186's causes apply, including the parasitic drain worth mentioning if the battery has been going flat.
