The most useful thing to know is that your car probably has a small hybrid system, and this is it — even if nothing about the car ever told you so.
Many cars built in the last few years carry a 48-volt starter/generator: a single machine that starts the engine, charges the battery, recovers energy when you lift off, and gives the engine a push when you pull away. There is no plug and no electric-only driving, so most owners have no idea it is there.
What you will notice when it stops working properly: stop-start no longer working, or restarting with a shudder and a clatter instead of silently; a flat spot as you pull away; fuel consumption that has crept up; possibly a battery or charging warning, since this is also the alternator.
None of that sounds like a hybrid fault, which is the problem. A workshop unfamiliar with the car may go looking for a starter motor it does not have. Mention that the car is a mild hybrid and that this code is stored — it saves a wasted diagnosis.
The car is safe to drive and will keep working. One warning if anyone is working on it: the 48-volt system is not the ordinary 12-volt one. It will not electrocute you, but it will deliver enough current through a dropped spanner to melt it. Its cabling is usually marked, and it should be left to somebody who knows what they are looking at.

A starter/generator is one machine doing the work of two, and on a mild hybrid it is doing a third job as well. Driven by the auxiliary belt, or mounted between the engine and the gearbox, it starts the engine, charges the electrical system, recovers energy on the overrun, and adds torque to the crankshaft when the engine is asked for more than it can efficiently give.
The point of this page is that when it stops working properly, nothing about the symptoms says "hybrid".
Most owners of a 48-volt mild hybrid do not know they have one. There is no plug, no electric-only driving, and the badge often says nothing. So the complaints arrive as ordinary driveability faults:
- Stop-start no longer working, or restarting with a shudder and a noise where it used to be seamless. A starter/generator restarts an engine faster and far more quietly than a conventional starter, and losing that is the most-noticed change.
- A flat spot pulling away, because the torque assist that covered the engine's weakest moment has gone.
- Worse fuel consumption, because the recovery on the overrun and the assist under load were both worth several per cent.
- A battery warning or charging fault, since this machine is also the alternator.
None of that gets attributed to a hybrid system, and a workshop that does not know the vehicle has one may go looking for a starter motor that is not fitted, or an alternator that is the same part.
One safety note that is genuinely different from the rest of the electrical system. A mild hybrid's second battery runs at around 48 volts — below the level that is dangerous to touch, but far above the level at which a short circuit is dangerous. It will deliver enough current through a dropped spanner to melt it, and its cabling is usually marked to say so. It is not the 12-volt system and must not be worked on as though it were.
As everywhere in this family, the fault is often upstream: a current or temperature sensor, the belt tensioner's position feedback, or the 48-volt battery's own management module makes this unit publish something the rest of the vehicle rejects while the machine itself is sound.
