The local controller inside a door, handling its window, mirror, lock and switches and reporting them to the rest of the vehicle over the body network rather than through a bundle of individual wires.

Two things about where it lives account for most of its faults. It sits inside a door, behind a plastic vapour barrier, above drain holes that block with leaf litter — so water is the dominant cause of door module trouble, and a damp connector stops carrying a signal long before anything looks damaged. And everything reaching it crosses from the A-pillar into the door through a rubber boot that flexes every single time the door is opened, tens of thousands of times. Conductors work-harden and break inside that boot, giving a fault that appears or clears as the door is moved — the single most recognisable body-network failure there is.

Which letter maps to which door follows the manufacturer's convention rather than a universal rule, and confirming it matters because the repair is a door strip. Note too that when two or more door modules go quiet together the fault is almost never in the doors — body modules share supplies and bus branches, so look at what they have in common.
