Get this looked at before driving much further. On a modern direct injection or common-rail engine the main pump feeds a high-pressure pump, and starving that pump is what destroys it — after which its metal debris contaminates the injectors and lines, which is one of the most expensive repairs these engines can need.
Two things to ask for, in this order. First, the fuel filter, which is a service item and the likeliest cause by a distance. Second, that fuel pressure and flow are measured under load rather than at idle — a tired pump holds pressure perfectly well when nothing is being asked of it, so an idle test passes and proves nothing. That one point decides whether the diagnosis is worth anything.
Also worth asking that the voltage reaching the pump be measured at the pump while it works. A pump fed through a corroded connector or a tired relay runs slowly and delivers less while being perfectly healthy itself, and replacing it would change nothing.
One habit worth changing: the fuel around the pump is what keeps it cool. Regularly running the tank down to the last few litres shortens a pump's life, and it will shorten the new one's too.

The main fuel pump is delivering less than the system requires. This is not a circuit fault — the pump is being commanded and is running.
The distinction that decides this diagnosis is between pressure and flow, and it is the reason a great many good pumps get condemned and a great many bad ones get passed. A tired pump can hold correct pressure against a closed system all day, because holding pressure with nothing moving asks almost nothing of it. Delivering volume under demand is a different job. So the fault appears under load — up a hill, overtaking, towing — and vanishes at idle, which is exactly where a static pressure test is taken.
Test under load or the test proves nothing. That single point is worth more than the rest of this page.
The causes run cheapest first, and the cheapest are genuinely the most likely.
- A restricted fuel filter. A service item, frequently overdue, and the commonest answer by a wide margin.
- The strainer on the pump itself — a fine mesh sock inside the tank that catches debris before the pump. It is a small, cheap part, it is almost never inspected, and a clogged one starves a perfectly healthy pump.
- Voltage at the pump. A pump fed through a corroded connector, a tired relay or a poor earth runs slowly and delivers proportionally less. The pump is not faulty; its supply is. Measure the voltage at the pump under load, not at the battery, because the difference between the two is the fault. This is the corpus's most repeated argument in its cheapest form.
- A restricted or collapsing supply line, which behaves identically to a weak pump.
- The pump itself, last rather than first.
Marked not to be driven, because on a direct injection or common-rail engine an inadequate supply starves the high-pressure pump downstream, and that pump destroys itself when starved and contaminates the injectors with its own debris — the argument set out at P2539 and P2540.
One behavioural cause is worth knowing because it is preventable. The fuel surrounding an in-tank pump is what cools and lubricates it. A tank habitually run down to the last few litres leaves the pump hot, and on hard cornering uncovered altogether. Running a car low as a habit is one of the more reliable ways to shorten a fuel pump's life, and a driver who does it is likely to do it to the replacement as well.
