Active Engine Mount

An engine mount that switches stiffness on command — soft while the engine stops, starts and idles, stiff while it pulls — controlled by vacuum or an electromagnetic valve. Hybrids lean on them because the engine stops and restarts dozens of times per journey, and each event would otherwise thump through the body. Failure is a comfort problem, never a powertrain threat: shudder as the engine stops and starts, coarse idle vibration. On vacuum-switched designs the commonest cause is a split or slipped vacuum line rather than the mount itself, which is the difference between pennies and a real part.
