Motor Current Sensor

Measures the current in each of a motor's three phases — and it is measurement and protection in one part, because phase current is both how the inverter knows the torque it is delivering and how it detects an overcurrent microseconds before its own silicon melts. The sensors sit inside the inverter assembly around the phase conductors, so "replacing the current sensor" is usually inverter work whatever the invoice says — which gives their external signal wiring unusual diagnostic value, being the half of the circuit a workshop can reach without opening anything expensive. Their characteristic wear-out is offset drift: at power-on every phase should read exactly zero, and a sensor whose zero has drifted fails that check while working normally otherwise.

Also known as: phase current sensor, current transducer, inverter current sensor, hall current sensor

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
