Battery Pack Coolant Control Valve
A motor-driven valve that decides where the battery pack's coolant goes.
On an electrified vehicle this is not a refinement, it is how the thermal system is built at all. There is a traction pack that wants to sit near twenty degrees, power electronics that will tolerate far hotter, a cabin that wants heat in winter and cooling in summer, and often a heat pump able to move warmth between them. Plumbing each of those separately would mean several radiators, several pumps and a great deal of weight. Instead the circuits are shared and a valve routes coolant between them as conditions change — pack to radiator, pack to heater, pack to nothing at all while it warms up.
Which makes its failure mode unusual and easy to misread: a stuck valve does not stop cooling, it redirects it. The pump still runs, coolant still circulates, nothing sounds wrong, and one part of the car is being looked after while another is not. So the complaint that arrives is rarely about cooling — it is a pack derating on a warm day, a cabin heater that has stopped working, or charging that has slowed for no visible reason.
Cold weather inverts the expectation and is worth naming separately. A battery works badly cold and the car deliberately warms it, so a valve stuck open can pour that heat away and leave the pack never reaching working temperature: reduced power, weak regenerative braking and rapid charging refused, on a car with no obvious fault. In a warm climate the same failure might never be noticed.
The valve is commanded on one circuit and its position reported on another, which is deliberate — a valve fails by sticking rather than by going open, and only the position sensor can see that.
