Was zu tun ist

The symptom is a cold-start one: slow to fire on a frosty morning, white smoke for the first minute, and rough running until it warms. In mild weather there may be nothing to notice at all, which is why this is often found on a service rather than reported.

Worth knowing that this is not the same thing as glow plugs. Some diesels use a single heater across the intake instead of, or as well as, glow plugs — so a workshop quoting glow plugs for this code may be looking at the wrong part.

One thing to report if you have seen it: a battery that keeps going flat, or a charging warning, alongside this code. A heater element or relay that has failed on rather than off leaves an enormous load switched on permanently, which drains the battery and looks like a charging fault on a perfectly good charging system.

The intake air heater system is not achieving what it is supposed to achieve. This is a result rather than a circuit — the heater has been operated and the intake air temperature has not risen the way it should have.

Diesels have two quite different ways of warming a cold engine enough to fire, and knowing which one a vehicle has decides what this code means. Glow plugs heat a small region inside each combustion chamber — one per cylinder, and covered by their own codes. An intake air heater warms the whole air charge before it gets there, using a single element in the intake, usually a grid across the manifold entry. Some engines have both; many have one or the other. Where an engine has only the grid heater, this code is the whole of its cold-start assistance.

What the driver sees is a cold-start problem and nothing else. Diesel ignites by compression, and compression heats air by squeezing it — so an engine that starts from cold air is starting from a lower temperature and may not reach the ignition point in every cylinder. The cylinders that miss put unburnt fuel into the exhaust, which is the white smoke and the rough running that clears once combustion heat has done what the heater should have done.

One failure mode is worth naming because it is electrical rather than thermal. If the element or its relay fails short, or the relay sticks closed, a load of a hundred amps or more stays applied. That is more than the charging system was designed to carry continuously, so it flattens the battery, works the alternator hard, and presents as a charging complaint on a vehicle whose charging system is fine. A heater that is warm to the touch long after the engine has warmed up is that.
