Controls a powered seat's adjustment, and on many vehicles stores memory positions tied to a key or driver profile.

It is easy to dismiss as a comfort device, and on many vehicles that is a mistake — because the same module frequently carries the occupant classification system. A front passenger seat contains sensing whose job is to decide whether the airbag should deploy and how hard: an empty seat, a child seat and an adult each call for different behaviour. Where that reports through the seat module, losing the module means the restraint system has lost the information behind that decision, and the correct response is to disable the passenger airbag and light the airbag lamp. So the question that sets the severity is whether the airbag warning light is on.

Physically the causes are mundane and consistent: the harness runs under the seat, flexes every time the seat slides, and sits exactly where feet, luggage and spilt drinks arrive. Seats also come out for a great many unrelated jobs — carpet, trim, floor repairs, retrofits — and a connector left unmated or a loom pinched under a rail during refitting is an ordinary cause. Where memory profiles are stored, a replacement usually needs coding to the vehicle and loses every stored position.
