U0186: Kommunikationsverlust mit dem Audioverstärker A

Was zu tun ist

The car drives entirely normally, and this is worth mentioning to a garage for a reason that has nothing to do with music.

If your battery has been going flat over three or four days — while the car starts perfectly when you drive it daily — say so. These amplifiers are among the biggest continuous loads in the car, and they are switched on and off by a signal from the stereo rather than by the ignition. One that has dropped out of the conversation can sit switched on with the car locked, quietly emptying the battery overnight. That turns a minor audio fault into the explanation for something expensive.

Then look at where the amplifier lives, because it is almost always either under a front seat or behind a panel in the boot.

Under a seat: look for anything spilt, anything pushed under there, and anything laid over it — a mat or rug over an amplifier blocks the air it needs.

In the boot: look for water. A hardened rear light seal or an aged tailgate seal puts water exactly there.

One thing this is not. If the sound cuts out when you turn the volume up and comes back later, that is a different fault — the amplifier overheating or its power supply sagging — and new speakers will not fix that either.

And if a stereo, amplifier or subwoofer was fitted after the car was built, say so.

Was dieser Code bedeutet

The audio amplifier has stopped being heard from. The general reasoning is at U0100, amplifier B is at U0262, and U0487 covers where these units live and why that determines how they fail.

Silence has one consequence worth more than the lost music, and it is the reason this page is not purely cosmetic: an amplifier that has stopped communicating has not necessarily stopped drawing current.

These are among the largest continuous loads on a vehicle's accessory circuits, and they are switched on and off by a signal from the head unit rather than by the ignition. A unit that is no longer part of the conversation may sit powered up with the vehicle locked — and a battery flat after three or four days, in a vehicle that starts perfectly when driven daily, is the classic presentation.

So mention any battery trouble alongside this code, because it converts a low-priority audio fault into the explanation for something expensive.

One complaint is regularly attributed to this code and is a different fault. Sound that cuts out when the volume goes up and returns after a while is an amplifier protecting itself — from heat, because it is covered or its ventilation is blocked, or from a supply that sags under load. That unit is still communicating and this code would not be stored. Replacing speakers does not fix it either.

Where the fault is, as at U0487, is decided by where it is mounted. Under a front seat is where feet, luggage, spilt drinks and the vacuum cleaner go, and where seat rails move over the wiring. In a boot side panel is where water arrives through a hardened rear light gasket or an aged tailgate seal. And on any vehicle with an aftermarket installation, the added power feed and its earth are the first things to look at, not the last.

Was einen Bericht lesenswert macht:

  • Das Fahrzeug — Marke, Modell, Baujahr und Motor. Derselbe Fehler verhält sich auf jedem anders.
  • Was Sie gemessen haben, nicht nur, was Sie getauscht haben.
  • Was es tatsächlich behoben hat — oder dass nichts es behoben hat, was ebenso nützlich ist.
