Stop driving and check the coolant level before going any further. This is one of the few codes where continuing to drive can turn a cheap repair into an engine.
Do not open the expansion tank or radiator cap on a hot engine. The system is pressurised and the coolant is above its normal boiling point, so releasing the cap makes it flash to steam and it will scald badly. Let it cool completely first.
Top it up with the correct coolant for the vehicle — not plain water except as an emergency measure to get somewhere safe — and then treat this as a leak to be found rather than a level to be maintained. Coolant does not get used up. If it has gone, it is going somewhere, and topping it up every few weeks is how a perished hose becomes a warped cylinder head.
Most importantly: do not rely on the temperature gauge to tell you if it gets worse. The gauge measures coolant, so when the level drops below its sensor it reads the air pocket instead and can show perfectly normal while the engine is overheating. That is the reason this code exists — it is warning you about the thing the gauge is unable to see.
Two things worth telling a workshop: whether the heater still blows properly hot, since a lukewarm heater is often the earliest sign, and whether there is sweet-smelling white smoke from the exhaust, which points at coolant being burnt internally rather than leaking onto the ground. Ask for a cooling system pressure test — it finds the leak in minutes, including a tired pressure cap, which is the cheapest possible answer.

The coolant level in the system has fallen below the minimum the sensor is set to report. This is not a circuit fault. The vehicle is not guessing — it has been told, and what it has been told is true.
Coolant is not consumed. Oil is burnt in small quantities by every healthy engine and fuel is consumed by definition, but a cooling system is sealed and its contents do not go anywhere in normal use. A level that has fallen has leaked, and the only question is where.
- Externally — a perished hose, a plastic thermostat housing or coolant elbow gone brittle with age, a radiator seam, a water pump seal weeping, or the expansion tank itself cracking along a moulding line. These leave evidence: a crusty white or coloured deposit at the leak, a sweet smell, sometimes a puddle.
- Through the pressure cap. A cap is a wearing part with a spring and a seal, and one that no longer holds its rated pressure lowers the boiling point of the coolant and pushes it out of the overflow. This looks like a leak with no leak, and the cap costs very little.
- Internally — past a head gasket into a cylinder, where it is burnt and leaves the exhaust as steam. This is the one that leaves no puddle at all, which is exactly why a disappearing level with nothing on the driveway is the more worrying finding rather than the more reassuring one.
Now the part that makes this dangerous rather than merely expensive: the temperature gauge cannot warn you, and most drivers believe it can.
The gauge is fed by a sensor immersed in coolant, and it reports the temperature of whatever is touching it. As the level falls, that sensor ends up in an air and steam pocket — and air carries heat away from a sensor far worse than liquid does. So the gauge can sit perfectly normal, or even drop, while the cylinder head is running hot enough to distort. The needle that would have told you is measuring the wrong thing, through no fault of its own. On top of that, modern gauges are deliberately damped and normalised so they read steady across a wide band, which removes the small early movements that used to be a warning.
The damage is not gradual. Aluminium cylinder heads warp, and once a head is warped the gasket cannot seal it — so a leak that would have been a hose becomes a head gasket, a skimmed head, or a replaced engine. The gap between the two outcomes is often a single journey.
Three things a driver can establish without any equipment:
- Whether the heater still blows hot. The heater matrix is usually the highest point in the circuit, so it is the first thing an air pocket reaches. A heater that has gone lukewarm is frequently the earliest sign of a falling coolant level, and it appears before the gauge moves.
- Whether there is white smoke from the exhaust that smells sweet and does not clear as the engine warms — steam rather than condensation, and a pointer to the internal case.
- Whether the level falls again after topping up, and how quickly. That is the measurement a workshop will otherwise have to spend time reproducing.
And the cheapest professional check is a pressure test: a system pumped up to its working pressure and watched. It finds leaks that only appear hot, it finds a failing cap, and it takes minutes.
