U0184: Communicatieverlies met de radio

Check what else has stopped working before deciding this is only about the stereo.
On most cars built in the last ten years, the unit in the middle of the dashboard is not a radio — it very often runs the heater and air conditioning controls, the reversing camera, the parking sensor display and the car's settings menus as well. So check whether the climate controls and the reversing camera still work; that decides how urgent this is.
Then ask for the fuses to be checked, because there are two supplies and it is a very common and very cheap answer. A head unit needs a permanent live (for its memory and clock) and a switched live (to tell it the car is awake). A blown fuse on the permanent one looks exactly like a dead stereo.
And if those two have ever been swapped — which happens in aftermarket installations and hurried refits — you get one of two tell-tale symptoms. Either the unit forgets everything each time you switch off, or it never realises the car has gone to sleep and flattens the battery over a few days. If either of those describes yours, say so; it points straight at the wiring.
Otherwise, the most useful thing to say is whether the stereo is the original one. A replacement fitted without a proper vehicle-specific interface is the commonest cause of this code by a distance.
The car is safe to drive. If the reversing camera has gone, use your mirrors rather than trusting a frozen image.

The radio has stopped being heard from. The general reasoning is at U0100, and U0485 corrects the title — on a vehicle built in the last decade the head unit is the cabin's computer, and it commonly carries the climate controls, the reversing camera and parking display, the vehicle settings menus and the phone connection as well as the audio.
So the first thing to establish is the scope: what else has gone with it? A dead stereo is a nuisance; a dead stereo that has taken the heater controls and the reversing camera with it is a different problem, and the answer decides how urgent this is.
Silence has one cause that bad data does not, and it is worth knowing because it is cheap and it is routinely missed: the two supplies.
A head unit needs a permanent live and a switched live. The permanent one keeps its memory, its clock and its settings; the switched one tells it the vehicle is awake. They are adjacent in the connector and they get swapped, particularly in an aftermarket installation or a hurried refit.
- Swapped one way, the unit loses everything each time the vehicle is switched off and behaves like a new one every morning.
- Swapped the other, the unit never learns the vehicle has gone to sleep — so it does not either, and the battery goes flat over a few days.
A single blown fuse on the permanent live produces the same symptoms as a failed head unit, and it is the first thing to check.
After that, U0485's dominant cause stands: an aftermarket head unit fitted without a proper vehicle-specific interface, which leaves the vehicle sending messages nothing answers. And on newer vehicles, coding — an original unit taken from another car of the same model is frequently tied to that vehicle's identity, and on many designs to its immobiliser.
