A plug or lever — usually orange, usually under a seat, in the boot floor or on the pack itself — that sits in the middle of the traction battery's series string. Pulling it does not switch the battery off. It splits the battery in two, so neither half on its own reaches a lethal potential, and that is what makes the pack safe to work near. Every piece of high-voltage service work begins with removing it.

It is also part of the interlock chain, which is where its trouble codes come from. With the disconnect out or not fully seated, the contactors must not close and the vehicle must not energise its high-voltage system — so a fault here usually stops the car powering on entirely. That refusal is the safety system working, not a second fault to be worked around. It differs from the high voltage interlock loop in being one specific, removable, hand-operated device rather than the continuous monitored circuit that runs through every cover and connector.

Its commonest real-world failure is not a failure at all. The device has a deliberate two-stage action — the connector seats, then a lever or catch latches it home — and a plug that looks and feels fitted can be one movement short. A vehicle that will not power on immediately after high-voltage work is very often exactly this, and reseating it costs nothing.

It must never be bypassed. Bridging the circuit to get a car moving removes the guarantee that the pack can be de-energised, and the next person to work on that vehicle — possibly at a roadside, possibly after a collision — will be relying on a safety system that is no longer there.
