The car drives, usually with a shudder at a steady cruise and worse fuel economy. Do not accept a torque converter replacement as the first step — ask for the fluid condition to be assessed and, if it is dark or smells burnt, for a fluid and filter service to be tried first. That fixes a real share of these and costs a small fraction of the alternative. Prolonged driving with a slipping converter clutch does add heat and does make things worse, so it is worth attending to rather than living with.
Wat deze code betekent
The module commanded the converter clutch to lock and the expected result did not follow — either no lock-up at all, or lock-up that slips instead of holding. Electrically everything is in order, which is what separates this from P0743.
This code is worth reading carefully, because the word "converter" in it does a great deal of damage. Replacing a torque converter means removing the transmission, and it is one of the more expensive repairs on the vehicle. It is also, for this code, not the most likely fix.
Fluid condition is the leading cause, and the cheapest. The converter clutch is a friction surface applied hydraulically, and its ability to grip depends on the friction modifiers in the fluid — additives that wear out with heat and time. Fluid that has been cooked loses them, and the clutch then engages but slips, producing the characteristic shudder. A fluid and filter service resolves a meaningful share of P0741 complaints outright, and it costs a fraction of anything else on the list.
Then the solenoid and the valve body. The lock-up solenoid itself, or a worn bore in the valve body leaking away the pressure meant to apply the clutch, will both prevent lock-up while the converter is perfectly sound. Both are reachable by dropping the pan on most transmissions — a considerably smaller job than removing the gearbox.
The converter itself is last, and it is genuinely the answer sometimes. But the order matters: the expensive possibility should be reached by elimination, not assumed from the code's name.
