Shift Fork
The finger that slides a gear into mesh. Each fork rides a rail inside the gearbox and pushes a synchroniser sleeve across to lock a gear to its shaft — the motion your hand made through a manual lever, performed by actuators in an automated or dual-clutch box, with a position sensor reporting exactly where each fork stands.
Fork position is how the box knows a gear is truly engaged, which matters doubly in a dual-clutch: the module will not hand torque to a clutch whose gear it cannot confirm. A fork fault therefore shows as missing gears rather than total failure — the box shifts around the rail it cannot trust, and which gears misbehave names the rail.
The fork itself bends and wears at its pads; its sensor and wiring fail electrically; and the synchroniser it pushes wears in ways that read back through the fork's own codes.
