Manual Shift Switch
The paddle or gate switch through which a driver requests a gear on an automatic. Purely an input: the transmission shifts automatically regardless, so a failure costs manual mode and nothing else. Where both up and down requests fail together on a steering wheel installation, suspect the clockspring — the coiled ribbon cable carrying every steering wheel signal across the rotating joint — rather than two switches, especially if the horn or audio controls have also become unreliable.
