Expect stalling or a no-start. Do not rely on this vehicle for a journey — the failure mode is the engine stopping without warning, which is genuinely hazardous at speed or in traffic. If it cuts out when hot and restarts once cooled, say so explicitly; that pattern is the strongest single clue and is easy to miss.
A circuit fault in the primary crankshaft position sensor. This is the single most important signal the engine control module receives: it establishes engine speed and crank angle, and without it there is no spark timing, no injection timing, and no misfire detection. On most engines a total loss means the engine will crank but not fire at all.
The reason this code deserves particular care is that the sensor commonly fails with heat rather than outright. A car that starts perfectly cold, runs for twenty minutes, cuts out on the motorway and then restarts after standing for half an hour is the textbook presentation — and it is very often misdiagnosed as a fuel pump, because the symptom is identical from the driver's seat. Testing needs the sensor's output observed while hot, not measured cold in a workshop.
